U.S. Battery Storage Capacity Surges 70% Annually Over Past Three Years, EIA Reports

WASHINGTON, August 17, 2026 - The United States utility-scale battery storage sector has experienced a remarkable growth trajectory over the past three years, with capacity expanding at an average annual rate of 70 percent, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

According to the agency's most recent Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory, the U.S. electrical grid had a working battery storage capacity of 43.6 gigawatts (GW) at the end of 2025. In the first half of 2026, operators added yet another 8.3 GW, increasing the total capacity of the grid's battery storage to almost 52 GW.
This remarkable boom represents a turning point in the functioning of the electricity grid of the United States as battery storage becomes integral to grid reliability, renewable energy integration, and market efficiency.

Solar-Plus-Storage Leads the Charge

The expansion has been driven in large part by the rapid deployment of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects paired with battery storage systems. Solar PV plants now host the largest battery storage capacity units across the country.

The Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm located in Kern County in California is one very important project with operations commencing in December 2025. The project consists of the capacity for solar energy of 500 MW and very much the same amount of capacity for storage of batteries for CAISO. Plans are already being devised for the increase in capacity doubled in power and storage by November of 2026 making it the largest facility of this kind throughout the United States of America.

This price arbitrage strategy has made battery storage an attractive investment for developers and utilities alike.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has further accelerated the sector's growth by providing investment tax credits for energy storage projects. Nearly two-thirds of planned U.S. battery storage projects are now eligible for 40 percent tax credits based on energy community criteria, provided construction begins before 2034.

Future Outlook: Continued Expansion Ahead

The growth appears to be uninterrupted. According to EIA reports about plans for construction, the companies expect 54 GW added in battery storage capacity in the following 2.5 years. According to plans, operators are aiming for 14 GW of new capacity in the second half of 2026; in 2027 and 2028, they are planning to create 26 GW and 14 GW respectively.

The expectations in the industry are even bigger. Some experts are anticipating that the battery storage capacity will be over 105 GW by 2028. Developers have already announced their plans to generate 24 GW of new utility-scale capacity for 2026 after a record-breaking 15 GW of capacity was introduced in 2025.

A Transforming Grid

An annual growth rate of 70 percent between the years 2023 and 2025 represents one of the fastest capacity growths seen in the U.S. power sector. In 2023, the United States had 6.4 GW of newly installed battery storage capacity, a year-on-year growth of 70 percent. The capacity installed during the following year stood around 10 GW. The capacity expansion trend continued through the year 2025 - a historic year for the battery storage industry with 15 GW of capacity addition.
