LA PAZ, Bolivia – A confluence of falling natural gas output, abundant solar resources, and rising electricity costs is driving a remarkable surge in demand for photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Bolivia. Yet industry leaders warn that the sector's path to scalable growth remains hindered by limited financing options and insufficient market awareness.

Energy Crisis Fuels Market Momentum

Bolivia currently relies on natural gas for approximately 70 percent of its electricity generation. However, declining gas production has triggered growing concerns over energy security, creating an urgent impetus for diversification. This supply-side pressure has converged with the country's exceptional solar endowment-Bolivia boasts some of Latin America's highest levels of solar radiation-to create a fertile ground for solar photovoltaic expansion.

The company has reported a sharp increase in enrollment for its PV installation training and diploma programs, underscoring the swelling commercial and public interest in the sector.

Compelling Economics: 3- to 5-Year Payback

One of the most powerful catalysts behind the demand surge is the compelling return on investment that solar installations now offer. Industry data indicates that PV systems in Bolivia generally pay for themselves within three to five years. With equipment lifespans exceeding 20 years and relatively low maintenance costs over the long term, solar power presents a viable pathway for businesses and households to substantially reduce their electricity expenses.

This economic calculus has made solar an increasingly attractive proposition not only for large industrial consumers but also for small and medium-sized enterprises and residential users seeking to hedge against volatile energy prices. The financial benefits are further amplified by the country's high solar irradiation, which maximizes generation output per installed unit.

Distributed Generation Reforms Open New Avenues

The Bolivian government has moved to facilitate sector growth through regulatory reforms. In February 2026, the administration approved Supreme Decree No. 5549, which revised the distributed generation regulatory framework by establishing a new "medium distributed generation" category for projects between 1 MW and 6 MW.
