MANAUS, Brazil - Deep in the Amazon rainforest, where rivers are the only roads and the nearest city can be days away by boat, a quiet energy revolution is underway. Solar panels and battery storage systems are bringing something that once seemed impossible to more than 2,000 isolated communities: reliable electricity and, with it, a connection to the wider world.
For decades, the Indigenous and riverine communities scattered across the Brazilian Amazon have lived beyond the reach of the national power grid. The National Interconnected System (SIN), one of the world's largest centralized electricity networks, simply does not extend into these remote areas. Instead, an estimated 425,000 families across Brazil remain off-grid, with nearly 1 million people in the Amazon region alone living without access to electricity.
A Diesel-Dependent Past
Life in these communities used to involve using noisy, polluting diesel generators – if they had electricity at all. Diesel-which is delivered by boat over difficult river routes- is used to fuel around 160 thermal power plants and thousands of generators found in the surrounding rainforest. The Brazilian government spends approximately $ 2.4 billion every year on subsidies in this scheme. The emissions of the isolated systems were as high as 0.67 tons of CO2 per megawatt hour in 2005, which is almost 17 times more than that of the national grid of Brazil.
"The diesel was costly and hard to access," said Waldemir da Silva, one of the leaders of the Três Unidos Indio community belonging to the Kambeba tribe and situated around 72 km from Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, available only by boat. "We had to depend on diesel and kerosene for lamps. Now we got electricity 24 hours a day and no noise and smoke".
Solar Microgrids Transforming Lives
In December 2025, da Silva's community of about 40 families became one of the latest to benefit from a solar-battery microgrid system. The transformation was immediate. Refrigerators now keep food fresh. Ceiling fans run all night - a boon for tourists who have boosted the community's eco-cultural tourism offerings. One community member reported that his guesthouse occupancy rate increased by 70 percent after the solar installation.
The shift is being driven by a combination of federal policy, falling technology costs and philanthropic initiatives. Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy is leading an ambitious plan to add solar panels and battery storage to diesel plants throughout the Amazon. Last year, the ministry approved an initial set of 29 projects that together will serve 650,000 people and avoid 800,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2036. Subsidy savings from these projects are projected to reach approximately US$171 million.
Connecting the Forest People
Perhaps the most profound impact of solar energy has been in enabling internet connectivity. The Conexão Povos da Floresta (Forest People Connection Network) operates approximately 370 photovoltaic systems across communities with no access to the conventional electrical grid. The program installs custom solar energy kits - including photovoltaic panels, powerboxes and lithium batteries - in areas where conventional electricity is unavailable. Community members are trained to maintain the systems themselves, building local capacity and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The network's mission is ambitious: to connect more than 8,500 forest communities across the Amazon. By the end of 2024, the network had already established connections in over 1,400 communities. Today, that number exceeds 2,000.
Beyond Electricity: Education, Health and Opportunity
For these communities, connectivity means far more than email or social media. It opens doors to education, healthcare and economic opportunity that were previously unimaginable.
In communities where broadband internet was once scarce, students can now access online learning resources. Health workers can consult with doctors remotely and access medical databases. Small-scale entrepreneurs can connect with markets beyond their villages. Families can now use freezers to store food, televisions for information and communication, and internet access to stay in touch with relatives in distant cities.
"I can use the freezer, the TV, even the internet," one resident told researchers, describing life after solar installation.
A Model for the Region
The success of these solar initiatives has drawn attention from across the Amazon basin. On Ilha das Cinzas in the Marajó archipelago, a 150 kWp solar system with 300 kWh of battery storage now serves 470 agro-extractive families. The project, developed through a partnership between WEG, Natura and the local extractive workers' association, has reduced electricity costs by 78 percent and increased local income by up to 60 percent. It prevents approximately 30 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually.
In the town of Tefé, home to 74,000 people, energy technology company Aggreko is deploying one of the largest hybrid systems in the program, integrating solar generation and battery storage into an existing diesel plant. China's Huawei is supplying the technology, including approximately 122 MWh of batteries.
The state of Amazonas already has approximately 323 MW of installed self-generation solar power, distributed across more than 17,800 photovoltaic systems. Yet this potential is still far from what the region can achieve.
Challenges Remain
Despite the progress, significant challenges persist. The region's vast geographical dispersion, communities that are difficult to access and high logistical costs continue to slow the transition. Approximately 82,000 families in the Amazon basin still lack electricity. Past attempts at solar projects have sometimes failed due to inadequate planning and training - an estimated 80 percent of systems became nonfunctional within five years.
But the trajectory is clear. "The Amazon region offers some of the best conditions to demonstrate how solar energy and storage systems can transform the energy reality of isolated communities," said Helane Souza, director of the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association in Amazonas. "Solar energy combined with batteries represents a strategic alternative to increase security of supply and accelerate the decarbonization of the region".
For the more than 2,000 communities now connected - and the thousands more waiting - the sun is finally rising on a new era of possibility.
