Tesla Launches U.S.-Made Solar Panels, Completing Its Integrated Home Energy Ecosystem

Tesla, Inc., Palo Alto, CA and Buffalo, NY, February 3, 2026-Tesla has released its own Tesla Solar Panels to conclude its integrated residential energy ecosystem. The Tesla Solar Panels are produced in its Gigafactory in Buffalo, NY, and seamlessly integrate with the Tesla Solar Inverter and Powerwall to provide a complete high-performance and aesthetically-pleasing solution for residential customers. This new product strategy allows Tesla to offer everything the customer needs for electricity-related hardware and software in one location while meeting many of the customer's current solar market problems, such as complexity of installation and performance impacts due to shading.

 

Engineered for the Real World: The "Power Zone" Innovation

 

The Tesla Solar Panel (TSP) series utilizes a unique 18 independent "Power Zone" architecture, which is the foundation of the new range. There are three bypass diodes on traditional residential panels, with six zones. A shadow on the panel from a chimney or tree can stop a significant portion of the panel from generating electricity. The TSP's design creates three times as many zones as there are on a traditional panel, as it consists of 18 distinct electrical zones.

The TSP's multi-zone architecture gives the TSP the ability to function as a high definition electronic display. If one of the 18 electronic zones is covered by a shadow, the remaining 17 will continue to generate power at nearly optimal levels. It behaves as if each of the 18 electronic zones are separate modules (i.e. will perform as well as modules with module level power electronics) without the need for individual electronic components on the roof & associated installation costs, wiring complexity & potential failure points due to having additional electronic components on the roof. The TSP technology has been specifically developed to work with Tesla string inverters, to optimize the complete energy harvesting process including from the power sources (e.g. rooftop) to the electrical utility grid.

 

Domestic Manufacturing and Streamlined Installation

 

Assembled in Buffalo, New York-a facility also responsible for the premium Solar Roof tile-the TSP panels underscore Tesla's commitment to a secure U.S. supply chain and allow the company to leverage federal manufacturing incentives. The initial production capacity at the facility is scaling to over 300 MW per year.

Complementing the panel is the new Tesla Panel Mount, a rail-less mounting system constructed from black anodized aluminum alloy. This design utilizes the module frame itself as the structural support, eliminating traditional rails and visible clamps. According to Tesla, the new system saves 33% installation time, and when combined with the integrated aesthetic skirts, gives it a low profile, minimalistic look consistent with the brand's overall design philosophy. In addition to being used by Tesla's direct-installation teams, the new system will also be available to Tesla's more than 1,000 certified installers across the country, showing the "installer first" philosophy behind this new system and encouraging adoption of the system.

The panels utilize cascading cell technology, similar to the technology found in Tesla's Solar Roof, which is used to overlap the cells and eliminate the visible silver grid lines between the cells, creating a uniform all-black appearance. While these new traditional panels are another way for Tesla to broaden their customer base, the company indicates that their Solar Roof is still the premium offering for customers who need to replace a complete roof.

 

Creating Value Beyond the Roof: The Virtual Power Plant Network

 

Tesla emphasized that the true value of its integrated Home Energy Ecosystem extends beyond individual homes. Through its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform, the company aggregates and coordinates the dispatch of energy stored in distributed Powerwall batteries.

"As a result of the increased demand for these types of assets, we're working more closely with utilities than ever to make sure that these assets can be used in virtual power plants and help support the grid and create new value streams for both utilities and consumers," commented Colby Hastings, Senior Director of Tesla Energy. "We have deployed more than one million Powerwalls globally, 25% of which are enrolled in a VPP program." This new capability will allow homeowners to help maintain grid reliability and get paid for their contribution; thus, the home energy system becomes a revenue-generating asset, as opposed to just being a cost.

 

Strategic Launch in a Dynamic Market

 

This new product announcement comes at a very important time in the U.S. solar market as it faces major policy changes such as the expiration of federal tax credits. Tesla's focus is on lowering the so-called "soft costs" associated with solar systems (customer acquisition, design and installation labor) that are significant contributors to the total installed cost of a solar system. By taking control of its entire technology stack (from solar panels and solar inverters to batteries and software), Tesla is trying to create uniformity across the solar market while making it easy for customers to purchase a solar system and, ultimately, to be able to afford one.

"Utility rates across the country are going up, making electricity increasingly unaffordable for homeowners," Hastings noted. "We're still very bullish on the future of distributed energy here in the United States."
