MEXICO CITY - Mexico is witnessing notable progress in the development of electric vehicle charging network; as per the industry statistics, Mexico's EV charging network saw an increment of 17.5% in the first half of 2026. In the first quarter of 2026, 25,003 electric cars were sold, representing a growth of 21.6 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, thus bringing the total amount of EVs in Mexico to over 235,000 units. The government has implemented measures including toll booth discounts for EVs on highways in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, exemptions from the federal tax on new cars (ISAN), and income-tax deductions related to the depreciation and use of rechargeable electric vehicles. These incentives create a favorable environment for both EV adoption and the deployment of on-site solar generation to power those vehicles.

The convergence of falling solar panel costs, declining battery storage prices, and the growing availability of smart EV charging technology is making integrated "solar + storage + charging" systems increasingly accessible to Mexican homeowners and businesses. As Mexico aims to boost public chargers to 112,000 by 2030, the potential for solar-powered charging solutions is substantial.

Comparing Two Solar-Powered Charging Markets

The growth of charging facilities in Mexico is similar to that of a wide range of markets with abundant solar resources. Italy, for example, had 84,564 public charging stations in June 2026, with 53% of the new installations in the previous year being fast or very fast stations. Much of the growth in Italy's network can be the result of a requirement that new constructions are fitted with "solar + charging" integrated technologies. The target set for 2030 is to achieve a total of three million charging stations (both public and private), with construction peaks in 2026.

In the two cases - namely with regard to Mexico and Italy - the private sector is the main force behind the new installations of charging points. In the case of Mexico, private charging stations account for over 90% of installations, while in the case of Italy, the private sector has 56,279 installations.
