The working principle of solar panels

Solar panels are apparatuses that transform solar energy into electric energy. Their principle of functioning is based on the photovoltaic effect seen in semiconductors.

The commonly used material is single-crystal silicon. Each silicon atom has 4 valence electrons. Through "doping" (i.e., doping with phosphorus and/or boron), P-type semiconductors (where holes are the main charge carriers) and N-type semiconductors (where free electrons are the charge carriers) are formed. The N-type semiconductor is formed between the two layers, that is, always near the junction of the two layers of material.
When sunlight (composed of photons), hits the surface of the solar panel, the photons are taken up by the atoms of the semiconductor material.
The PN junction create an internal electric field that causes the charge to move in a directed way, thus generating voltage.
The amount of current that is generated depends on light intensity, the amount of area on the surface of the solar cell, and the efficiency of the material used.
